The government should create a ''quick reaction force'' of federal law enforcement and/or National Guard members to secure the U.S. Capitol and Washington, D.C., in general at a cost of $40 million to $130 million per year, a task force appointed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., recommends.
"We recommend establishment of a robust, dedicated QRF, not only for the USCP, but to serve the nation’s capital writ large," the report by Task Force 1-6 says.
The group was led by retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré, who has called for Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., and former Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf to be ''run out'' of Washington and also accused some of the Capitol Police for being complicit in the Jan. 6 breach of the Capitol.
The force would be a round-the-clock operation but a size was not specified.
It would either be a separate entity composed from existing law enforcement, a command under the D.C. National Guard from existing military police units from across the country on rotations of three to six months, or a permanent unit of active Guard troops living in or near the capital.
The task force also recommended a ''mobile fencing option that is easily erected and deconstructed and an integrated, retractable fencing system in the long term to secure both the Capitol and office buildings.''
