Poll: 76 Percent Approve of Trump's Speech

Just over three-quarters of those who watched President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech approved of what he said, a new CBS News poll reveals.

Only 24 percent disapproved.

Here is how the poll breaks down:

  • 43 percent of those who watched the speech said they were Republicans; 24 percent were Democrats and 30 percent were Independents.
  • 56 percent of those polled said the speech will do more to unite the county; 8 percent said it will do more to divide the nation and 36 percent said it will not change things.
  • 33 percent said they believe Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., will now work together more; 4 percent say Trump and Pelosi will work together less and 63 percent said the speech will not change things.
  • 72 percent said they favored the ideas on immigration Trump outlined in his speech, while 28 percent opposed them.
  • 71 percent said from what they heard in the speech there is a crisis at the southern border, while 29 percent disagreed.
  • 78 percent say from what they heard, a second summit between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is a good idea, compared to 22 percent who say it is a bad idea.

The poll, conducted directly after Trump’s speech, surveyed 1,472 people. The margin of error is 3 percent.
