Democrats lead Republicans in a generic 2020 congressional ballot — and are gaining ground, according to a new poll.

In The Economist/YouGov survey of registered voters between last Saturday and Tuesday, 48% said they would vote Democratic next year, 37% would vote Republican and 11% were not sure.

That 11-point lead is up from the pollster's survey July 21-23, when when Democrats held a 7 point advantage over Republicans.

Democrat and GOP respondents each overwhelmingly said they would vote for their own party, the latest survey showed. But independents were split: 32% said they would vote for the Democratic candidate and 34% said they would choose the GOP contender.

Democrats are expected to keep control of the House in the 2020 elections, but face an uphill battle in the Senate, where Republicans hold a 53-47 majority, The Hill noted.

The margin of error of the latest poll was plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
