The Russians are interfering with the 2016 election in the United States, and that will likely continue after the new administration takes place, experts said.
Computer experts told The Guardian that Russia's purported involvement in the election via hacking of emails and releasing them to make parties and candidates look bad is part of a "Russian disinformation campaign."
"Hacking the DNC and Democratic congressional campaigns and then the leaking of stolen emails is somewhat ham-fisted, but it's an escalation of Russian disinformation campaigns," data security expert and author Richard Stiennon told the website.
"After the elections, the new administration will have to be prepared for even further escalations."
Author and former Naval intelligence officer Malcolm Nance told The Guardian the current situation between Russia and the U.S. is like Watergate.
"This is a slow-roll political attack on the entire political infrastructure of America," he said. "It is Watergate — it's literally Watergate. They did what Nixon couldn't do."
Russian President Vladimir Putin said last month the hacking of the DNC computers was a "public service," but he denied any Russian involvement.
