A super Pac backing Marco Rubio in the crowded contest for the Republican nomination for U.S. president has raised more than $16 million since April, the outside fundraising group said on Wednesday.

"We've definitely benefited from the strong response to Marco Rubio's first few months on the campaign trail, allowing us to exceed all our goals for the first half of the year," Warren Tompkins of the Conservative Solutions PAC said in a statement.

The fundraising totals were as of June 30. Conservative Solutions, as a super PAC, can raise money and advocate for Rubio but cannot coordinate with his campaign.

Super PACs, created in the wake of a 2010 Supreme Court decision, have shaken up the fundraising landscape because they can raise unlimited sums for political purposes.

Rubio, a U.S. senator from Florida, launched his campaign in April and has not yet shared his fundraising totals for the period through the end of June. Candidates must report the figures to the Federal Election Commission by July 15.

Rubio has positioned himself as a forward-looking leader and a standard-bearer for a new generation of Republican leadership.

The super PAC, in its statement, said he was the Republican with the best shot in the November 2016 general election against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the front-runner for the Democratic nomination.
