A report from the Americans Against Antisemitism group reveals that, over the last four years, just one person accused of committing a hate crime against Jews in New York City has spent any time in jail.
And that sentencing reportedly entailed just one day in jail.
For the Americans Against Antisemitism report, which was published in the Jewish-centric online magazine Tablet, of the 118 adults arrested for anti-Jewish hate crimes in NYC since 2018, "only one has been convicted and sent to prison."
According to the FBI, from a year-to-year basis, Jewish people are targeted for hate crimes more than any other religious or racial group in the United States.
Ynetnews.com reports that 1.7 million Jews live in New York, mostly in major cities and provinces of the state. "There are 10 Jewish Federations, with the New York City branch being the largest one in the United States."
According to Tablet: "In New York, street harassment, minor assaults, and even full-on beatings of visible Jews are almost a banality now, too frequent over too long of a period to be considered an active crisis, even in the communities most affected.
"The city reported a 76% year-over-year rise in hate crimes during the first three months of 2022 — attacks on Jews more than tripled, accounting for much of the spike.
"When reached for comment by email, the NYPD's public information office stated that the Hate Crimes Task Force has made 44 arrests related to attacks on Jews so far in 2022, compared to 33 in all of 2021."
The Americans Against Antisemitism/Tablet report also comes on the heels of a recent incident, captured on film, in which a man — presumed to be Jewish — was assaulted on the streets of New York, during the daylight hours, after what appeared to be a vehicle-bike accident at a crosswalk.
