Thirty percent of Americans say it should be permissible for small business owners to refuse service or products to gay or lesbian people if doing so violates the merchants' religious beliefs, a poll by the Public Religion Research Institute reveals.

- 29% say it should be permissible for small business owners to deny service to transgender people if doing so violates the merchants' religious beliefs.
- 24% say it should be permissible to deny service to atheists.
- 22% say it should be permissible to deny service to Muslims.
- 19% say it should be permissible to deny service to Jews.
- 15% say it should be permissible to deny service to African-Americans.
The poll, conducted April 9-20, surveyed 1,100 adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
