President Donald Trump praised the media Thursday during a visit to hurricane-ravaged Florida, a rare move from him given his rocky relationship with many in the press.

"Media, we appreciate you being so understanding," Trump said, according to The Hill. "It's been a very tough period of time, even for you folks and we really do appreciate your understanding. This has been a difficult situation."

Trump, his wife Melania, and Vice President Mike Pence were in Florida surveying the damage caused by Hurricane Irma. They visited with first responders and helped hand out water and food to people who needed it.

Millions of people are without power and, in many cases, water after Irma made landfall in the Florida Keys and traveled up the western side of the state last weekend.

Former FEMA chief Michael Brown told Newsmax's John Gizzi last month that Trump would be wise to be nice to the media during the coverage of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, which have left a trail of destruction in Texas, Louisiana, and Florida.
