There are 4,581 new coronavirus cases reported in the U.S.

CNN said it tallied at least 8,898 cases with 149 deaths at 6 a.m. ET on Thursday. The numbers rose to 13,479 cases with 196 deaths 24 hours later.

That marks an increase of 4,581 cases and 47 deaths.

Medical officials have been warning the number of cases would jump as more and more testing becomes available.

Yale professor Howard Forman has predicted an “explosion” in the number of reported coronavirus cases in the U.S.

He said his prediction was based on the fact that better testing would identity existing cases, according to Yale Insights.

"There is absolutely going to be an explosion in the number of identified cases," said radiologist Howard Forman. "But how fast that number increases is highly dependent on how fast we can test.”

CNN pointed out its own tally included all cases detected and tested through the public health system across the U.S. and its territories.

And it noted that a week ago there were 1,666 cases and 41 deaths.
