Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said Tuesday that African Americans will realize that they have been "manipulated" in the year leading up to the presidential election.

"American blacks over the course of this next year will begin to see that they've been manipulated, very, very largely — and people telling them what they're supposed to think and what they're supposed to say," the retired pediatric neurosurgeon told "The Mike Gallagher Show" on radio.

Carson was responding to a question about a YouGov poll showing that 74 percent of blacks surveyed said that his recent comments about having a Muslim in the Oval Office were unfair.

"More and more, I'm finding, [that they] are thinking for themselves and are recognizing what really works for them and for their communities," Carson said. "And so, I believe that's a dynamic that's in the process in changing."
