Most Americans favor some restrictions on abortion, and that includes most supporters of abortion rights, a new
Marist poll finds.
The poll was commissioned by the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic fraternal organization.
According to the poll:
Favor restricting abortion to first trimester:
- General population: 81 percent
- Women: 82 percent
- Pro-choice backers: 66 percent
Laws can protect both mother and unborn child:
- General population: 77 percent
- Women: 79 percent
- Pro-choice backers: 71 percent
Abortion does woman more harm than good:
- General population: 55 percent
- Women: 56 percent
- Pro-choice backers: 27 percent
Oppose taxpayer funding:
- General population: 68 percent
- Women: 69 percent
- Pro-choice backers: 51v percent
Ban abortion after 20 weeks except to save life of mother:
- General population: 61 percent
- Women: 60 percent
- Pro-choice backers: 62 percent
Health care providers should be able to opt out on moral grounds:
- General population: 51 percent
- Women: 50 percent
- Pro-choice backers: 34 percent
The poll talked to 1,686 adults Nov. 15-22. Results for adults are statistically significant within ±2.4 percentage points. The error margin increases for cross-tabulations.
