In no uncertain terms, AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka condemned the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.
"Kavanaugh will skewer the [Supreme] Court more in favor of the wealthy and powerful elites," Trumka said at a Wednesday press breakfast in Washington, D.C., hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.
Although the union chieftain's opposition to the president's second nominee to the high court was not unexpected, his strong language and references to specific cases before the court was somewhat surprising to reporters.
Trumka, for example, denounced the recent "Janus v. AFSCME" decision in which the court ruled against public sector unions who collected union fees from workers who want nothing to do with them.
Justice Samuel Alito, Trumka said, demonstrated "the worst example of judicial activism" by his ruling in the majority on "Janus." He want to say the present Supreme Court was "the most corporate friendly court" in U.S. history.
Kavanaguh, he charged, "has a history for ruling for corporations against working people" and has "no respect for precedent."
