Excess Alcohol Increases Dementia Risk

We’ve all heard about how moderate alcohol use may protect brain health.

A study published in the British journal The Lancet demonstrates an association between too much alcohol consumption and risk for cognitive impairment.

Researchers analyzed data on more than 31 million patients discharged from French hospitals between 2008 and 2013 and found that alcohol use disorders were the strongest modifiable risk factors for dementia onset.

The lesson from this study is that although a glass of wine at dinner each night may protect the brain, excessive alcohol consumption appears to have a negative impact on brain health.
