What Should I Eat to Treat My IBS?

Question: I have irritable bowel syndrome and don’t know what to eat to make the symptoms go away. I’ve been told I shouldn’t eat salad. What should I eat?

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:

Irritable bowel symptoms usually respond well to a high-fiber diet. You can also take one teaspoon of Metamucil, or another fiber supplement, three times a day with an as-needed anti-spasm medication, such as Bentyl, after meals and at bedtime.

All patients with IBS must have a colonoscopy to be sure there are no structural problems, such as polyps, or masses such as cancer, in the bowel.
