Why Are My Toenails Discolored?

Question: My toenails are dark. I have tried several creams and nothing has helped. I keep my toenails painted with polish. What can I do?

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:

Dark nails most often are absorbing the discoloration from dye in your shoes. Sometimes a fungal infection is present, and can be checked by testing a nail trimming.

Trauma and injury can also darken a nail as will cancer. So be sure to be examined by your family doctor to identify the cause.
