Most statins work the same way, but they are by no means identical. Some of the newer statins have a very strong protective anti-inflammatory effect and have better benefits and fewer risks of side effects than first-generation drugs.
The newer statins such as Crestor are better tolerated by most patients, have reduced side effects and drug interactions, and do a better job at protecting the heart than older drugs such as Mevacor.
The older statins also seem to deplete CoQ10 levels more, which is why users often need to take CoQ10 supplements to prevent muscle aches and other risks. Most people who take a statin such as Crestor for a year, no longer require frequent blood testing for side effects
