How High Should My 'Good' Cholesterol Be?

Question: I was just told by my doctor's office that my blood work showed a total cholesterol count of 228, with 121 being LDL and the remainder HDL. Does the high ratio of good to bad cholesterol make this okay? I am 72 years old.

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:

If your HDL is 107 with an LDL of 121, I would be pleased with those figures. If you want me to be technical, I will say I prefer to see LDL under 100, but with such a wonderful HDL — well over the threshold many of us can reach — I believe you may be best leaving well alone.

You are right: your high HDL is your saving grace

Having a high level of 'good' cholesterol can compensate for otherwise high levels of the fatty substance in the blood.
