Democrat Terry McAuliffe conceded defeat in the state's governor's race to Republican Glenn Youngkin on Wednesday morning.

"Congratulations to Governor-Elect Glenn Youngkin on his victory," McAuliffe said in a statement released shortly before 10 a.m. ET.

"While last night we came up short, I am proud that we spent this campaign fighting for the values we so deeply believe in," the former governor said, adding in a statement that he was "confident that the long-term path of Virginia is toward inclusion, openness and tolerance for all."
