Obama to Have 2 Swearing-in Ceremonies — Again

By    |   Thursday, 06 December 2012 09:35 PM EST

President Barack Obama will have, again, two swearing-in ceremonies to the nation’s highest office.

This time, Obama will take the oath privately on Jan. 20 because the day falls on a Sunday, The Washington Times reports. The next day, a large public ceremony will take place.

According to the Inaugural Committee, the festivities will last three days — with a day of service on Saturday, the small private ceremony on Sunday, and the public swearing-in, parade and balls on Monday.

The small ceremony is a tradition for inaugurations that fall on Sundays, the committee said.

The festivities could cost taxpayers more than $100 million, the Weekly Standard reports.

Obama’s first inaugural cost over $125 million, compared with $115.5 for George W. Bush’s second celebration, the Standard reports.

But Obama’s first private swearing-in came after his public one in 2009, the Times reports. In that one, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts botched the oath, leading to a second one occurring at the White House.
