George and Amal Clooney donated $1 million to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) in a partnership to combat hate groups, the SPLC announced Monday.
The Clooneys are co-founders of the Clooney Foundation for Justice, established last year as a vehicle to "advance justice in courtrooms, classrooms and communities around the world."
In the wake of what happened in Charlottesville two weekends ago, the Clooneys decided to help buoy the efforts of the SPLC, a nonprofit with the mission of tracking hate groups and extremists.
"We are proud to support the Southern Poverty Law Center in its efforts to prevent violent extremism in the United States. What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate," the Clooneys said in a statement.
In announcing the partnership, SPLC president Richard Cohen took a shot at President Donald Trump.
"We were shocked by the size, ugliness, and ferocity of the white supremacist gathering in Charlottesville," Cohen said in his statement. "It was a reflection of just how much Trump’s incendiary campaign and presidency has energized the radical right."
