An American teacher was stabbed to death in the women's restroom of an Abu Dhabi mall by a suspect wearing a burqa on Monday.
According to NBC News
, the unnamed woman, 37, was rushed to Sheikh Khalifa Medical City where she died of her injuries, police said Tuesday.
She was mother of 11-year-old twins, who are now being taken care of by police until their father, the woman's ex-husband, arrives from abroad. The gender of her attacker – who fled the scene and remains at large – is still under investigation.
"The Abu Dhabi Police will spare no effort in order to unveil this heinous crime and bring the culprit to justice," Col. Rashid Borshid, head of the Criminal Investigation Department, said in a statement.
The Associated Press reported
that the wealthy United Arab Emirates (UAE) prides itself on being a safe haven for Westerners amid a hostile Middle East, and the latest incident threatens to tarnish that image.
The attack comes just a month after the U.S. embassy in Abu Dhabi issued a warning to U.S. citizens that anonymous posts on a jihadist website had called for attacks on American teachers working in the Middle East.
The warning stated that authorities were "unaware of any specific, credible threat against any American or other school or individual in the United Arab Emirates."
"Nonetheless, the Mission is working with local schools identified with the United States to review their security posture. U.S. citizens residing in or visiting the UAE should remain vigilant regarding their personal security."
