Princess Charlene of Monaco Gives Birth to Twins, Boy and Girl

By    |   Wednesday, 10 December 2014 07:37 PM EST

Princess Charlene of Monaco gave birth to twins Wednesday, a boy and a girl, but only baby Jacques is an heir.

Forty-two cannon shots rang out in Monaco welcoming Jacques and his twin sister Gabriella. Twenty-one cannon shots are fired for the birth of a single baby.

The twins are the 36-year-old Princess Charlene’s first children. The South African swimmer married Prince Albert II in 2011. Prince Albert, 56, has at least two other children whom the House of Grimaldi considers "illegitimate," The Daily Mail said.

The baby girl will receive the title Countess of Carladès (in Auvergne) and is second in line of succession behind her brother, whose title is Marquis of Baux (in Provence), People reported. While Gabriella was born first, the monarchy still adheres to a male priority in succession.

It is the first time Monaco’s royal family has given birth to twins since its founding in the 13th century, The Associated Press reported.

"This is going to create an immense joy. Immense!" Monaco resident Isabelle Roux said, according to the AP. "They are awaited like the messiah. ... Everyone is talking only about that."

Albert is the son of the late actress Grace Kelly.

Congratulations poured out on Twitter.
