New Hamburglar: Twitter Users Questions 'Creepy' McDonald's Character

By    |   Thursday, 07 May 2015 01:11 PM EDT

The new Hamburglar, McDonald's reboot of the masked burger bandit of years past, is drawing mixed reactions on social media, with many calling the revamped character "creepy."

"McDonald's is bringing the Hamburglar back to network television for the first time since 2002, and clearly he's spent the past 13 years slimming down at the gym and getting his life together," Mashable's Laura Vitto wrote. "His new look, complete with a slick black trench coat and red leather high tops, is a far cry from the pudgy little red-headed criminal we remember."

Joel Yashinsky, McDonald's' vice president of U.S. marketing, told Mashable that the Hamburglar that used to sell hamburgers to children is being reintroduced to market things like the new Sirloin Third Pound Burger to grown-ups.

"We felt it was time to debut a new look for the Hamburglar after he's been out of the public eye all these years," Yashinsky said in a statement. "He's had some time to grow up a bit and has been busy raising a family in the suburbs and his look has evolved over time."

Entertainment Weekly's Marc Snetiker wrote that the problem with the new Hamburglar is that it's too much of a leap from the old version and feels out of place.

"Old Hamburglar believably looked like he would actually shrivel and die if not for the mouthwatering combo of meat, cheese, and bun served into his bloodstream," Snetiker wrote. "New Hamburglar, on the other hand, probably won't eat anything unless it's served in an artisanal mason jar . . . New Hamburglar gets a side salad and makes a big deal when the bill comes."

The reaction on social media has been mixed.
