Michelle Duggar's sex advice to newlyweds, which she posted on her blog last week along with other marriage tips, has sparked controversy for the former "19 Kids and Counting" reality show matriarch.
In an Oct. 8 post titled "Michelle Duggar's Marriage Advice for Newlyweds," Duggar urged women to always "be available" intimately for their husbands. She relayed advice that a friend gave her on the subject.
"You've got to remember this. Anyone can iron Jim Bob's shirt, anybody can make lunch for him," Duggar said her friend told her. "He can get his lunch somewhere else. But you are the only one who can meet that special need that he has in his life for intimacy."
"You're it. You're the only one. So don't forget that, that he needs you," she continued. "So when you are exhausted at the end of the day, maybe from dealing with little ones, and you fall into bed so exhausted at night, don't forget about him because you and he are the only ones who can have that time together. No one else in the world can meet that need."
Duggar said in the blog that she always remembered the advice and makes sure to always be there for her husband.
"I'm meeting his needs, he's meeting my needs," she wrote. "We're willing to be there for each other. And each one of us has different needs in a marriage relationship and that's what's so precious."
Jane Greer, a marriage and sex therapist, pushed back on
Duggar's advice, telling Women's Health magazine that making yourself available when you are not interested could breed resentment in a relationship.
"It's impossible for you and your partner to always be in the same place sexually," Greer, author of "What About Me? Stop Selfishiness From Ruining Your Relationship," told Women's Health. "The challenge is to balance your desires with theirs and make room for both of your needs to be met."
Some on social media said they believe that Michelle Duggar's comments were actually a veiled dig at daughter-in-law Anna Duggar, who is married to Josh Duggar. The eldest Duggar sibling confessed to cheating on his wife earlier this year and using the affair website Ashley Madison
, according to People magazine.
