Lexington Fans Arrested After Kentucky's Loss in Final Four

By    |   Monday, 06 April 2015 10:49 AM EDT

More than 1,500 Wildcats fans overran the neighborhood next to the University of Kentucky's Lexington campus on Saturday night after the team was defeated in the NCAA Final Four, and 31 were arrested amid an orgy of street fires, fist fights and public urination.

Police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts told The Associated Press that the department was "thankful no one was seriously injured and that there was no major destruction of property."

She said that those arrested will likely face charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct starting this week.

The Wildcats lost to the Wisconsin Badgers 71-64, and game-goers spilled into the streets chanting anti-Wisconsin slogans following the game. The situation was cleared by 2:15 a.m.

For the most part, police in riot gear let the crowd burn itself out, but did step in and make arrests when it spotted anyone getting too rowdy. Pepper balls were used to break up one fight.

"This was a citywide effort to clear this situation ... it really requires the whole city to come together in situations like these," Roberts told NBC News.

Wisconsin will face Duke University in the NCAA championship game.
