Beer from a Keurig? It looks likely. The popular coffee maker could be getting a new lease on life in a partnership with Anheuser-Busch InBev to create the first in-home alcoholic drink dispenser.
The partnership was announced jointly by the two companies on Friday as a research and development venture focused on the North American market, according to Reuters. The companies want to develop a beverage dispenser that could work with beer, spirits, cocktails, and mixers.
The Keurig Kold technology discontinued in June by Keurig took six years to develop, and Keurig would like to use it in efforts to diversify away from the coffee brewer market, according to Bloomberg.
In addition to the Kold technology, which was previously used for iced teas, sodas, and flavored waters, AB InBev’s brewing and packaging technologies will be integrated into the product.
No financial terms, details about the machine, brands of beverages, or regulatory issues were disclosed or discussed yet by the two companies, according to Reuters.
The partnership comes as companies adapt to consumers drinking more at home rather than at restaurants, bars, or events held at large venues, Bloomberg reported.
Keurig was acquired for $13.9 billion by JAB Holding Co. last year, according to Bloomberg. Keurig CEO Bob Gamgort said of the joint venture that it would allow Keurig and AB InBev to combine “our capabilities and technologies to deliver innovation,” Bloomberg reported.
Coca-Cola had owned 17 percent of Keurig but sold its shares when JAB bought Keurig.
