The newly released Season 5 "House of Cards" trailer shows Frank and Claire Underwood battling a tough re-election opponent and trying to hold onto power any way they can.
The upcoming season, which will be available on Netflix for streaming starting May 30, will turn even darker than the preceding ones, as the Underwoods engage in increasingly desperate attempts to stay in office.
“The American people don’t know what’s best for them. I do,” Frank Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey, says in a voiceover on the trailer as scenes from the upcoming episodes scroll.
“They’re like little children, Claire,” he continues, referring to his wife and current running mate, played by Robin Wright. “We have to hold their sticky fingers and wipe their filthy mouths. Teach them right from wrong. Tell them what to think and how to feel and what to want.”
“Luckily for them, they have me. They have you. Underwood 2016. 2020. 2024. 2028. 2032. 2036. One nation, Underwood,” he finishes, corrupting the Pledge of Allegiance.
Some scenes in the trailer show Underwood campaigning as well as engaging in confrontations, people being arrested, and what looks like a swearing in.
The show is expected to have some parallels to real life situations and feature the signature dirty politics and backbiting that the first four seasons contained.
“House of Cards” was one of the first Netflix original series to gain a following when it premiered in 2013. The show has won six Emmy Awards.
Twitter fans called the trailer “chilling” and seemed to be anticipating an exciting season.
