In tweets and a speech on the Senate floor Tuesday, Sen. Harry Reid suggested Donald Trump’s wealth is fake and that the Republican presidential nominee is not worth as much as he claims.
Reid took to the floor after attacking Trump on Twitter: “Trump is faking his net worth. He’s not as rich as he would have us believe + a bad businessman. That’s why we can’t see his tax returns,” he tweeted.
According to RealClearPolitics, Reid’s speech continued the attack by claiming Trump uses his charitable foundation for personal expenses and to hang out with rich people, and that he is a "swindler" who is "ripping off the American people and our government," according to Real Clear Politics. Reid has repeatedly pressed Trump to release his tax returns, but Trump says that he can’t because he is being audited.
CNN reported Reid also tore into Trump for his business being sued dozens of times in federal and state courts: “Trump being the flim-flammer he is just moves onto another scam.”
Reid used his position as minority speaker to make similar accusations against Mitt Romney when Romney was running for president in 2012, including accusations that Romney had not paid his taxes for 10 years. Romney later released his returns and showed Reid to be false, although it was never acknowledged by Reid.
Several Republican lawmakers spoke out against Reid’s attack on Trump. According to RealClearPolitics, Sen. David Perdue of Georgia called Reid’s speech “out of line” and “demagoguery,” while Sen. Lindsey Graham said, “The last person I listen to about presidential race is Harry Reid.” Graham doesn’t support Trump.
Trump declined requests to comment on the speech. In the past, Trump has said that he has a net worth of $10 billion.
