Missing Georgia couple Bud and June Runion last had contact with Ronnie Adrian "Jay" Towns, who turned himself in on Monday after multiple arrest warrants were issued in his name.
"We were interested in who last had phone contact with the Runions, and this individual did," Telfair County Sheriff Chris Steverson
told WMAZ. "We interviewed Mr. Towns early on in the investigation and the info he provided did not corroborate with our investigation."
The Runions went missing after traveling to McRae to purchase a vintage Ford Mustang from a seller who contacted them on Craigslist on Thursday. The phone used to set up the call was described by investigators as a disposable cellphone.
Investigators declined to comment on whether the Runion's bank accounts had been accessed since they've gone missing.
"He was excited about the car," Stephanie Bishop, one of the couple’s daughters, said of her 69-year-old father. "He had one when he got back from Vietnam."
The family suspected the couple missing the next day, when they failed to arrive to babysit their grandchildren.
Steverson said that warrants had been issued for the 28-year-old suspect for making false statements to investigators and for criminal attempt to commit theft by deception.
He is described as 6 feet 4 inches tall, 210 pounds, with blue eyes.
