DeAndre Harris, who was beaten at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August, has been charged with a felony in connection with the incident, The Washington Post reported.
Harris, 20, who was a counterprotester at the Aug. 12 rally, was beaten and bloodied by at least six people during in an incident that was caught on video, where he was pummeled with sticks and kicks, the Post reported.
Police arrested two men in Harris's beating after a social media campaign was started to identify his attackers, the newspaper said. Alex Michael Ramos, 33, of Jackson, Georgia, was charged with felonious assault, and Daniel Patrick Borden, 18, of Mason, Ohio, was charged with malicious wounding, in connection with the Harris case, according to the Charlottesville Daily Progress.
On Monday, the tables were turned and a local magistrate issued an arrest warrant for Harris, who was accused of injuring a man, the Daily Progress said.
The victim of the alleged attack by Harris obtained a warrant at the magistrate's office in person, the Daily Progress. The newspaper said that an arrested warrant was issued after a Charlottesville police detective investigated the victim's story.
Harris's civil attorney S. Lee Merritt told The Washington Post that he believed the charge against Harris was "clearly retaliatory" and said the accuser was a member of a white supremacist group. Merritt charged that Harris did not initiate the fight.
"We find it highly offensive and upsetting, but what's more jarring is that he's been charged with the same crime as the men who attacked him," Merritt said, saying that Harris will turn himself in soon.
The incidents happened during the so-called "Unite the Right" rally after Charlottesville officials voted to remove a monument to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a downtown park. The event eventually pitted white nationalists, white supremacists, neo-Nazis and members of the alt-right, against a swelling group of counterprotesters, the Post said.
Counterprotester Heather Heyer, 32, was killed and several others injured when they were hit by a vehicle driving into a crowd, the Post wrote. James Alex Fields Jr., 20, an alleged Nazi sympathizer, was charged with second-degree murder in the hit-and-run, according to the Post.
