The Dallas Zoo celebrated the birth of a baby giraffe on Friday evening, and so did many across the globe watching live via the Internet.
According to USA Today, the baby was the second child of Katie the giraffe, whose roughly hour-long labor was broadcast live on Animal Planet. After the birth,
viewers can still watch Katie and her new daughter via webcam as they spend their first days together.
A recording of the broadcast will be used for an upcoming documentary about Katie and her pregnancy.
In addition to the birth itself, the show will detail the prenatal care the giraffe received, how the zookeepers care for her, and what they expect now that the new baby has arrived.
Giraffes typically carry their baby for 15 months, meaning their offspring are already several feet tall when born. Newborns typically walk within an hour of being born, and that was the case for Katie's daughter — who is now in the nursing phase.
"HEY, WORLD!: Meet our new nearly 6-feet-tall, 100+ pound baby giraffe!" the zookeepers
said in a celebratory Facebook post.
