A video of a little girl dancing on a subway platform in Brooklyn last month to music by bluegrass duo Coyote & Crow has gone viral, racking up more than 4.5 million views since it was posted online last week.
The smile and exuberance of the little girl dancing to a cover of the Grateful Dead's "Me and My Uncle" and her contagious effect on the normally hardened straphangers elicited smiles all around, with
Fast Company calling the impromptu dance party "New York City at its very best."
"If a tooth-achingly sweet little girl with rhythm to spare doesn't make you smile or even grin just a tiny bit, you're a lost cause," the business mag wrote. "For those who haven't misplaced their souls, enjoy this display of unbridled joy and a glimpse of New York City at its very best."
Blogger Matt Sutkoski added Monday: "The gleefulness in the girl wearing pink, and several others who started dancing is so infectious. No wonder the video has gone so viral."
Eliza Berman, of Time magazine, wrote that the video is what makes a trip through New York City so special at times.
"The underground music scene in New York City — underground as in the subway system, not secret clubs — is characterized by a wide range of quality," she wrote. "But occasionally you stumble upon a gem. This video from a Brooklyn station is precious not as much for the band's rollicking version of the Grateful Dead’s 'Me and My Uncle,' but for a small, bespectacled child’s joyful dancing."
"The girl's roof-raising jig gradually inspires a small hootenanny of strangers coming together in unfettered joy. At one point, her glee escapes from her in the kind of scream reserved only for the highest moments of elation."
Others on social media said the little girl just brought a smile to their faces.
