A baby wipe recall has been issued for 10 brands that were sold prior to Oct. 21 to Walgreens, Sam's Club, Family Dollar, Fred's, and Diapers.com. All lots are affected.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, the wipes were distributed by Nutek Disposables, Inc. of McElhattan, Pennsylvania. A small number of complaints about odor and discoloration of the wipes led to company to conduct microbial testing, whereupon it found a presence of bacteria, Burkholderia cepacia (B. cepacia).
The bacteria poses little medical risk to most healthy people, but can make those with weakened immune systems or chronic lung diseases, particularly cystic fibrosis, are more prone to infection with B. cepacia.
The source and cause of the bacteria is unknown, but the company continues to investigate. In the meantime, the affected facility has discontinued producing wipes.
The full list of affected brands are: Cuties, Diapers.com, Femtex, Fred’s, Kidgets, Member’s Mark, Simply Right, Sunny Smiles, Tender Touch, and Well Beginnings.
