President-elect Donald Trump will offer Britain a quick and “fair” trade deal within weeks of taking office in an attempt to make Brexit successful, The Times of London reported on Sunday.
In his first UK interview as president-elect, Trump said he would invite British Prime Minister Theresa May to visit him “right after” he enters the White House, insisting that “We’re gonna work very hard to get [a trade deal] done quickly and done properly. Good for both sides.”
Trump predicted that other countries would also leave the European Union as Britain did, saying that if EU countries “hadn’t been forced to take in all of the refugees, so many, with all the problems that it . . . entails, I think that you wouldn’t have a Brexit. It probably could have worked out, but this was the final straw, this was the final straw that broke the camel’s back.”
The president elect said that German Chancellor Angela Merkel “made one very catastrophic mistake and that was taking all of these illegals, you know, taking all of the people from wherever they come from.”
Trump said that he will sign orders to strengthen the borders of the U.S., which could include travel restrictions on Europeans coming to America and “extreme vetting” for those arriving in the U.S. from countries known for Islamist terrorism.
In the interview, Trump also said he would lift U.S. sanctions on Russia in exchange for a nuclear weapons reduction deal. He insisted that he would start off his presidency by trusting Russian President Vladimir Putin but admitted he was not sure how long that would last.
The Guardian pointed out that the interviewer was Michael Gove, who was sacked as justice secretary when May became prime minister. He ran against May and then returned to The Times, where he has been critical of the government.
The Guardian said that “the spectacle of her erstwhile leadership rival winning the ear of the most powerful man in America, while she has yet to secure a firm date for a face-to-face meeting, can’t have been welcome to May.”
