Newt Gingrich: Hillary's Fall in Polls Could Jeopardize Nomination

With a new CNN/ORC poll showing that more Americans now have an unfavorable view of presidential candidate Hillary Clinton than they have since 2001, the Democratic Party could be forced to consider another nominee, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich tells Newsmax TV.

"She has a real challenge because about every week or 10 days another shoe drops," Gingrich told "Newsmax Prime" on Tuesday. He noted that even the FIFA soccer scandal included Clinton Foundation donations. A Saudi propaganda group donated to the foundation as well.

Foreign donations to the foundation have spurred suspicion among the former secretary of state's foes that the money was intended to buy influence should she be elected president.

The controversy is likely to go on for another six months or a year, posing a significant challenge to Clinton's primary race, Gingrich said.

Though Democrats generally don't care about the allegations, they are having an impact on independents, he said.

"That may reopen the Democratic Party nomination," he said.

The prospect of foreign money influencing a president "really strikes at American patriotism," Gingrich said, and reflects a longstanding concern going back to the nation's founding about leaders being corrupted by foreigners.

"Alexander Hamilton wrote about it in the Federalist Papers and said the greatest threat to a republic is corruption from overseas," he said.

"When Benjamin Franklin was given a very nice gift, he literally had to write a letter to Congress and say, 'Am I allowed to keep this?' That's how strongly the Founding Fathers feared foreign corruption."
