House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is attempting to block an attempt by Republicans to expedite an extension of Federal Aviation Administration programs, according to a press release on the House minority leader's website.
Current law that oversees the FAA expires on Sept. 30, and the bill seeks to extend the law for six months, according to Politico.
Pelosi said the "sprawling" bill goes beyond just addressing aviation programs and includes "unrelated and inadequate" items.
Republicans' not taking action on the bipartisan Dream Act that would put "Dreamers" on a path to citizenship is another reason for her opposition, she added.
"America's patriotic young Dreamers must have swift action on the bipartisan Dream Act. In addition, we face urgent deadlines for community health centers, the State Children's Health Insurance Program and issues that relate to affordable flood insurance. Instead of acting on these priorities, House Republicans are advancing a sprawling FAA extension package laden with completely unrelated and inadequate items," Pelosi wrote.
Republicans in the House of Representatives had hoped to put up the FAA extension for a vote on Monday using a fast-track procedure, but Democrats appear to be mostly united in their opposition to that move, Politico reported.
"The weak tax provisions added to this package don't treat all families recovering from natural disasters the same. All Americans, no matter where they live, deserve the same relief and resources they need to rebuild their lives," she wrote.
Air safety advocates are taking issue with cutbacks in FAA regulations that have been proposed for the Republican package.
