Sen. Mike Lee: Merrick Garland Should Be Next FBI Director

Sen Mike Lee, R-Utah said President Donald Trump should nominate Merrick Garland, former President Barack Obama's choice for the Supreme Court, to be the next FBI director.

Lee is serious about the suggestion, Conn Carroll, a spokesman for the senator told The Hill.

"One name I think the White House ought to consider in Merrick Garland," Lee told Fox News.

"I would imagine that this might be a post that might interest him and it might be a post that he could serve in very effectively."

Lee had previously supported Republican efforts to refuse to give Garland a hearing or a vote last year on his nomination to the Supreme Court, The Hill noted. The move allowed Trump to fill the vacancy with Neil Gorsuch after becoming president.

The Hill said when Garland worked for the Department of Justice, he helped to oversee the investigation of the 1995 federal building bombing in Oklahoma City.

The effort was noted by Carroll, in a tweet, The Hill identified as belonging to Lee's spokesperson:
