Democrats are optimistic about their chances of taking back the House of Representatives, but according to a Washington Post analysis, that's "still in the realm of the hypothetical."
According to an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, Democrats are winning on the "generic ballot," where voters are asked if they would "vote for a generic Republican or a generic Democrat for Congress," by six points. Although according to the Post, the generic ballot is not very reliable.
On Tuesday, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi predicted that Democrats would win the House back if the election were held today, CNN reported. But Democrats would have to win 38 seats to have a majority, 12 that "lean Democratic," 17 that are a "toss-up," and nine of 23 that "lean Republican." In 2014, Republicans won back the House while winning in only four districts that leaned Democratic.
"Nancy Pelosi's record of predicting House races is about as reliable as a carnival palm reader," Katie Martin, National Republican Congressional Committee spokeswoman, told CNN.
"For now, though, we're still talking in very hypothetical terms about Democrats taking over the House and down-ballot Republicans paying a price for Trump's blunders," writes Aaron Blake for the Post.
