Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said a bipartisan deal on gun legislation is close.
Murphy made his announcement in a Wednesday tweet:
The legislation is designed to close gaps in background checks for those looking to purchase firearms, Chris Harris, a spokesman for Murphy, told The Hill.
The move follows the mass shooting at a Texas church earlier this month where 26 people were killed. It was later revealed the gunman, Devin Kelley, was able to purchase firearms, despite a history of violence, The Hill noted.
Kelly died of a self-inflected gunshot after the massacre.
