The marketing industry's standard for spam rates on email campaigns is 8 percent. Donald Trump's first fundraising email had a staggering 60 percent spam rate, according to Ad Age.

How did that happen? The campaign used DonaldTrump.com during primary season, but introduced DonaldJTrump.com for "The First One" e-mail campaign soliciting donations, and spam filters did not recognize the new domain, Ad Age reported.

In other words, a rookie mistake.

"Since it's a new domain he's being penalized," Tom Sather, senior director of research for Return Path told Ad Age. "These are things that professional email marketers prepare for."

Other data on Trump's first fundraising email, according to Ad Age:
  • Only 12 percent who received the email opened it;
  • 6 percent who received the email deleted without opening.
Further, back in May, Trump's campaign used just 21 different targeted messages compared to 272 by the Bernie Sanders' campaign and 658 by Hillary Clinton's.

The result: Sanders had only a 0.3 percent spam rate and Clinton enjoyed a 0 percent spam rate, Ad Age reported.

Exacerbating matters, Clinton has an email subscriber list that is 7.6 times larger than that of Trump's, according to Ad Age.
