Rep. Blake Farenthold on Endorsing Trump: 'I Wanted to Look the Man in the Eye'

By    |   Thursday, 07 July 2016 07:49 PM EDT

Rep. Blake Farenthold told Newsmax TV Thursday that he held off on endorsing Donald Trump until after the presumptive nominee met with congressional Republicans.

"I wanted to look the man in the eye, make sure he understood the things that were important to me as a conservative," the four-term Texas congressman told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth.

He said that he wanted to hear Trump discuss such issues as tax reform and "shrinking the size of government."

"I'm comfortable getting on board," he told Hayworth. "I can guarantee you he'll do a better job as president than Hillary — I-just-assumed-to-tell-a-lie-than-the-truth — Clinton."
