Vice President Joe Biden said Hillary Clinton never "really figured it out" regarding why she was running for the White House — and only did so out of duty in hopes of becoming the nation's first woman president.
"I don't think she ever really figured it out," Biden told The Los Angeles Times. "And by the way, I think it was really hard for her to decide to run."
He said Clinton saw her victory "would have opened up a whole range of new vistas to women" as did President Barack Obama's for African-Americans.
"She thought she had no choice but to run," Biden said. "That, as the first woman who had an opportunity to win the presidency, I think it was a real burden on her."
Biden, 74, who is leaving office in January after more than four decades on Capitol Hill, reiterated Clinton lost by not reaching out to white, working-class voters.
"They're all the people I grew up with," the former Delaware senator said. "They're their kids. And they're not racist. They're not sexist.
"But we didn't talk to them."
