Conservative House Freedom Caucus member Trent Franks believes GOP presidential contenders Sens. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz can either come together or lose separately —and is pushing for one to continue on in his White House bid, while the other be named a vice presidential candidate.
The Arizona congressman, a critic of presidential front-runner Donald Trump, says the tactic is for the good of the party,
Politico reports.
In a letter sent to fellow Republicans Wednesday night, Franks asks colleagues to back his push to rally the establishment around either the Florida or Texas senator to beat Trump, Politico reports.
"We call upon all national security, free-market, and pro-family conservatives to boldly rally around the two of you together and ask you both to answer the call of statesmanship and decide between yourselves which shall be the candidate for President and which shall be the candidate for Vice President," the letter states, Politico reports.
Franks' letter underscores the misgivings some Republicans have about the New York real estate billionaire, Politico reports.
Franks believes Trump's inconsistencies and shifting stances on national security, the free market, abortion and traditional family values are significant issues, and that he is "incontrovertibly, the weakest general election candidate in the Republican field" — and if nominated, would only ensure Democrat Hillary Clinton's White House bid.
"Now is a time for choosing — for you, and for us," his letter states, Politico reports.
