Ted Cruz was endorsed Tuesday by Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council for the Republican presidential nomination.
"He's smart. He's bold," Perkins told Megyn Kelly on Fox News. "He's not afraid to upset people to do the right thing.
"He's not worried about making everybody happy," Perkins added. "If you're making everybody happy, you're not doing the right thing."
Perkins, the FRC's president, emphasized that he was making "a personal endorsement" and that it did not reflect that of the council or any of the other nonprofit organizations that he heads.
He said that he knew several of the candidates "personally." Perkins said that he has worked with Cruz since he first came to the Senate in 2013.
"This is about his standing on conservative principles, about his standing on the Constitution," he said. "He's a bold leader and the kind of leader we need right now."
Cruz and Trump are running neck-and-neck in Iowa, which holds its caucuses on Monday.
Perkins told Kelly that "there are things about him that are attractive," referring to Trump. "I find him interesting. I would consider him.
"I'm not going to say anything negative about Donald Trump," he said.
