Sharyl Attkisson: McCain Comments Were Just Trump Being Trump

By    |   Tuesday, 21 July 2015 04:08 PM EDT

Those used to Donald Trump's explosive style on the long-running show "The Apprentice" are likely unfazed by his no-holds-barred, shoot-from-the-lip style of campaigning, Emmy-winning journalist Sharyl Attkisson tells Newsmax TV.

Trump stirred a hornets' nest of protests when he question the heroism of Sen. John McCain, who served in the Vietnam War and was a prisoner of war for five years.

But Attkisson — author of "Stonewalled: My Fight for Truth Against the Forces of Obstruction, Intimidation, and Harassment in Obama's Washington," published by Harper — said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" that it's just the billionaire developer's way of communicating.

"Trump has a way, if you've watched him, I've watched his show, I've probably seen more of him than maybe other candidates simply because of his show 'The Apprentice' and so I'm used to that style," Attkisson said.

"It doesn't surprise or shock me. He sort of will throw something out there and amend it immediately or throw something out there and then kind of contradict himself and come around.

"That's a style he has, so maybe his supporters have seen that are used to it and aren't bothered by it, but certainly many people were offended."

On "The Apprentice," Trump put armies of young go-getters through the paces as he searched for potential executives — a search during which he canned underachievers with the now-famous phrase "You're fired!"

Last month, NBC, which aired the show, severed business ties with Trump following his comments about some Mexican immigrants being criminals.

In the fall, Attkisson will host a Sunday morning national news program to be aired on Sinclair Broadcasting affiliates.
