President Barack Obama says the groundswell of support for a candidate like Donald Trump is nothing new in American history — but believes the billionaire real estate tycoon doesn't have the temperament to lead the United States.
"I see Trump as a phenomenon of an expression of certain fears, certain resentments that have been a running thread in American history," Trump told Vanity Fair in an interview conducted by presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin.
"And so there are always going to be figures who become symbols and expressions of those fears and resentments. So he's not unique in that sense.
"I don't think it's a surprise for me to say that I don't think his temperament is suited for this office. But it's not something that I have to emphasize because I think the majority of the American people have figured that out."
Obama added that "on the spectrum of successful politicians, I'm not introverted the way some have been, but I'm not an FDR or a Bill Clinton, who are just constantly … in a crowd and just relishing it. I like my quiet time."
