South Dakota Sen. John Thune tells Newsmax TV he hasn't heard from any Republican presidential candidates looking for a vice president, but added he is open to listening should he get a call.

Appearing Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show," Thune said the vice presidency isn't something he has aspired to and he is happy with his job in the Senate, but added, "if you're interested in public service, you never really rule out opportunities."

Asked if he would consider the second-place position of either front-runner Donald Trump or his main rival Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Thune said, "I think you always take that call and listen and hear them out."

Trump has accused Cruz of being someone who isn't liked by any of his colleagues in the Senate.

Thune said Cruz has his own style and has adopted an outsider approach in how he operates.

"In terms of running a national campaign for president, that's a pretty popular position to have, but I do think that it probably makes it a little bit harder to get things done in the Senate," he said.

Any Republican who ends up winning the White House will have to work with Congress, he said.

Thune said he will support the Republican nominee no matter who it ends up being.
