Presidential hopeful Donald Trump says that he still doesn't know if President Barack Obama was born in the United States.
"I don't know. I really don't know. I don't know why he wouldn't release his records," Trump told
Anderson Cooper on CNN on Thursday.
Trump was one the most vocal skeptics, questioning whether
Obama was born in Hawaii or in Kenya, where his father is from.
But the real estate mogul says that he wasn't the only one interested in this bit of information.
"Do you know that Hillary Clinton was a birther? She wanted those records and fought like hell. People forgot. Did you know that John McCain was a birther? Wanted those records. They couldn't get the records. Hillary failed. John McCain failed," Trump told CNN.
In 2011, Obama released the
long-form version of his birth certificate after pressure from Trump and others.
Trump told CNN that he takes credit for getting the president to release the birth certificate.
"Trump was able to get him to give something. I don't know what the hell it was, but it doesn't matter," he said, adding that "he came up with this thing all of sudden, miraculously."
In 2012, Trump said that he would give
$5 million to a charity of Obama's choice if the president would release his college transcripts and passport application.
But the real estate mogul said that he doesn't want to get into that issue again.
"I'm off that subject. I'm about jobs. I'm about the military. I'm about doing the right thing for this country. I want to make our country great again," Trump said.
In March, the billionaire also questioned whether
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is eligible to be president since he was born in Canada.
