Author and political analyst Dick Morris says President Barack Obama is trying to bluff Republicans into supporting a healthcare plan that will be far more radical than he’s letting on.
It’s crucial that the GOP doesn’t fall for the ruse, Morris warns in an interview with Newsmax.TV, because the fight over Obamacare is the “mother of all battles” — one that will determine the course of the Obama presidency. If Obama is successful in establishing national healthcare, it will be only the first step in transforming the United States into something resembling a European welfare state.
“If he loses this battle he’ll never get anything else passed,” Morris says. “He wins this battle, he’ll ride roughshod over the Congress.”

Democrats “want to put pressure on the Republicans to come to an agreement by telling them the train is leaving the station and either you do it now or the hell with you, we won’t pay any attention to your point of view,” says Morris, author of “Catastrophe,” a book that examines the dismal record of socialized medicine.
“I think that will fail,” he adds. “I think the Republicans are determined not to give them any votes.”
Morris, who has raised $1 million to air ads around the country attacking Obamacare, also said during the wide-ranging interview:
Obama will not abandon the so-called “public option” of national health insurance because he’ll lose too much support from his liberal base. The various Democratic healthcare plans being touted would create a huge shortage of doctors in the United States that could take a generation or more to fill. Meanwhile, Americans would die as the national healthcare bureaucracy denies them key surgeries. The GOP should target their message toward the elderly who will see their healthcare erode as more illegal immigrants are taken onto national healthcare insurance.So-called healthcare “co-ops” Obama touts are merely a guise for national healthcare because there is no existing co-op bureaucracy. The question now is whether — through town halls, web campaigns, op-eds, and advertisements — the GOP can muster enough support to stave off a single-party government from ramming a healthcare bill through Congress.
“I think Obama has sent this message that Obama is going to do this within the Democratic Party to forestall a rebellion from within his own party,” Morris said. “Now having said that, in the House he can get anything passed he wants. But there are about 10 or 15 senators who could vote against this package, and the variant there is whether the elderly of the United States see this as a direct threat to their healthcare.
“If the elderly understand that they are the victims, that this is a program to take $200 billion from [elderly] medical care and give it to the medical care of people who are in many cases legal and illegal immigrants; if the elderly understand that and overwhelmingly oppose it, then I think the Democrats may well back down because they’re scared of the elderly,” Morris said.
Morris also agreed with conservatives such as Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., that medical co-ops are a stealthy form of socialized medicine.
“The issue of the co-op or the public option is the exact same thing," Morris said. "It’s not like there’s a pre-existing co-op for 50 million people with independent leaders and independent boards and all of that. Nothing exists. And anything that exists will be set up by the government and eventually they’ll get around to turning it over to a co-op. But it’s a little like an army that takes over a government in central America and says ‘Oh, Oh, in a few years we’ll have an election.' Meantime, it’s still run by the government.”
“The fundamental issue of this health insurance program, which is the attempt to cover too few people with too few doctors, and the focus and determination to finance the program by major cuts in the Medicare program — those two fundamental elements of his plan — have not changed in the slightest and there’s no indication of flexibility,” Morris said. “So this is all window dressing designed on the one hand to seem like he’s compromising, and then on the other hand to reassure the Democrats that he’s going to work with them.”
