World-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson weighed in on the Supreme Court’s debate over legalizing gay marriage on Tuesday by saying “marriage is between a man and a woman.”
“It is a well-established, fundamental pillar of society,” Carson, the director of pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins University, told Fox’s Sean Hannity. “And no group — be they gays; it doesn’t matter what they are — they don’t get to change the definition.
“It’s not something that’s against gays,” added Carson, whose visibility has been rising since he criticized President Barack Obama at the National Prayer Breakfast last month. “It’s against anybody who wants to come along and change the fundamental definitions of the pillars of society. It has significant ramifications.”
The high court heard arguments on Tuesday on the constitutionality of California’s Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage. The justices signaled that that they were reluctant to embrace a broad ruling that established a fundamental right to marriage for gays and lesbians in the United States.
And on Wednesday, the court will hear arguments on whether to uphold the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which limits the definition of marriage to couples of the opposite sex.
Rulings in both cases are expected in June.
